John Ross, 1st Baronet

Sir John Ross, 1st Baronet (born December 11, 1853 in Derry , † August 17, 1935 in Dunmoyle Lodge, Sixmilecross , County Tyrone ) was an Irish lawyer and the last Lord Chancellor of Ireland .

Life

John was born on December 11, 1853, the eldest son of Robert Ross, pastor of the Fourth Presbyterian Church in Derry, and his wife Margaret. He attended the Model School and Foyle College in Londonderry, where Percy French was also enrolled.

In 1873 he enrolled at Trinity College Dublin , where he became a Sizar from 1874, a student who was supported with free meals or other forms of help. In 1876 he became the first student to receive a full scholarship . In 1877 he completed his studies for Bachelor from 1879 finally graduated in law with obtaining the LL.B .

In 1878 Ross had joined the English Bar Association Gray's Inn and was admitted to the courts in Ireland in 1879. In 1891 he was appointed Crown Attorney (Queens Council, QC). In 1893 he became a Bencher of the King's Inn . From 1892 to 1895 was a member of the House of Commons for the borough of Londonderry. When he was only 43, he was appointed Judge of the High Court of Justice in Ireland in 1896.

In 1902 Ross was sworn in as a Privy Council . In 1921 Ross succeeded James Campbell in the office of Lord Chancellor of Ireland, which he was the last to occupy after more than 800 years of tradition. With the dissolution of the office through the establishment of the Irish Free State in 1922, Ross retired to London, to later return to Northern Ireland .

After a 26-year career as a judge, only two of Ross's judgments have been overturned by the Lord Judges. In addition to his work as a lawyer and judge, Ross was involved in charitable activities. During the First World War he led the Red Cross in Southern Ireland. He has been awarded several times by the Order of Malta . In terms of sport, Ross distinguished himself as a rider and marksman and was captain of the Royal Dublin Golf Club.

In 1882 Ross married Katherine Mary Jeffcock with whom he had a son, Sir Ronald Deane Ross, 2nd Baronet (1888-1958), and two daughters. Ross died of pneumonia on August 17, 1935 at Dunmoyle Lodge in Sixmilecross, Tyrone.

Honors

In 1914 Ross received an honorary doctorate from Trinity College in Dublin. In 1919 he was made hereditary baronet , of Dunmoyle in the County of Tyrone, ennobled.
