John Albert William Spencer-Churchill, 10th Duke of Marlborough (born September 18, 1897 in London , † March 11, 1972 ) was a British peer and politician.

Life

He was the older son of Charles Spencer-Churchill, 9th Duke of Marlborough , from his first marriage to Consuelo Vanderbilt . As his father's apparent marriage , he had the courtesy title of Marquess of Blandford from birth .

He attended Eton College and studied at Christ Church College of Oxford University . In 1914 he joined the British Army and fought as a lieutenant of the 1st Regiment of the Life Guards in the First World War .

When his father died in 1934 he inherited his title of nobility as Duke of Marlborough and thereby became a member of the House of Lords . In 1936 he was appointed Deputy Lieutenant of Oxfordshire and Justice of the Peace . From 1937 to 1942 he was Mayor of Woodstock in Oxfordshire and from 1937 to 1972 he held the office of High Steward of Oxford .

In 1942 he served in the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel of the Life Guards during World War II , became a liaison officer to the allied US forces in Great Britain and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his services .

He died in 1972 and was buried in the crypt of the Blenheim Palace chapel.

Marriage and offspring

On February 17, 1920, he married the Hon. Alexandra Mary Cadogan (1900–1961), daughter of Henry Arthur Cadogan, Viscount Chelsea (1868–1908). From this marriage there were two sons and three daughters:

  • Lady Sarah Consuelo Spencer-Churchill (1921-2000), ⚭ (1) 1943-1966 Edwin F. Russell († 2001), ⚭ (2) 1966-1967 Guy Burgos, ⚭ (3) 1967 Theodoros Roubanis;
  • Lady Caroline Spencer-Churchill (1923–1992) ⚭ 1946 Charles Waterhouse (1918–2007);
  • John George Vanderbilt Henry Spencer-Churchill, 11th Duke of Marlborough (1926-2014);
  • Lady Rosemary Mildred Spencer-Churchill (* 1929) ⚭ 1953 Charles Robert Muir († 1972);
  • Lord Charles George William Colin Spencer-Churchill (* 1940), ⚭ (1) 1865–1968 Gillian Fuller, ⚭ (2) 1970 Elizabeth Wyndham (* 1948), ⚭ (3) 2014 Sarah Goodbody.

Six weeks before his death, on January 26, 1972, he married Laura Charteris (1915–1990), the widow of the American publishing heir Michael Tempel Canfield and divorced wife of Walter Long, 2nd Viscount Long and William Ward, 3rd. Earl of Dudley . This marriage remained childless.

His eldest son John inherited his title of nobility in 1972.
