John Stafford (Archbishop)

John Stafford (* before 1413; † May 25, 1452 in Maidstone ) was an English politician and Archbishop of Canterbury . He was also Bishop of Bath and Wells .

Youth and education

Stafford was the son of Sir Humphrey Stafford, Sheriff of Somerset and Dorset , and Elizabeth Dynham. The claim that he was an illegitimate descendant was made by a contemporary opponent in order to discredit him, but cannot be proven.

He graduated from Oxford University with a doctorate in law in 1413.

For his livelihood he served as a pastor in Farmborough , vicar in Bathampton and from the benefices from Wells Cathedral .

Ecclesiastical and secular career

In 1419 Stafford was appointed Dean of Arches Chief Justice at the Church Court and at the same time held the office of Archdeacon in the Diocese of Salisbury until 1421 . From 1423 to 1424 he was Dean of Wells Cathedral . In 1424 he received the benefice from Stow Minster .

Under Henry VI , he became lord seal keeper in 1421 and royal treasurer the following year . He held the office of Lord Chancellor from 1432 to 1450. On December 18, 1424, Pope Martin V appointed him Bishop of Bath and Wells . He was ordained bishop on May 27, 1425 by Henry Beaufort , Bishop of Winchester . Pope Eugene IV appointed him Archbishop of Canterbury in May 1443. He died in office on May 25, 1452.
