John Stewart, 1st Earl of Atholl
John Stewart, 1st Earl of Atholl (* around 1440; † September 15, 1512 in Laighwood ), was a Scottish nobleman from the Stewart family .
Life
He was a son of Sir James Stewart of Lorne and the former Queen of Scotland Joan Beaufort .
He was knighted and acquired Balvenie Castle . Around 1457, his half-brother, King James II , gave him the hereditary title of Earl of Atholl . In 1460 he was also given the subordinate hereditary title Lord Balveny . The Earl took an active part in the suppression of the revolt of the Lord of the Isles, John MacDonald, 11th Earl of Ross , and commanded the army of Jacob III in 1475 . against the rebellious lords. From 1484 he was the Scottish ambassador to England .
In 1459/60 he married Margaret , daughter of Archibald Douglas, 5th Earl of Douglas . Margaret was her brother's heir, and the king provided them both with ample goods on the occasion of their marriage. After Margaret's death in 1475 he married Eleanor († 1519), daughter of William Sinclair, 1st Earl of Caithness, as a second marriage .
