John Stewart (musician)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

John Stewart (born September 5, 1939 in San Diego , California , † January 19, 2008 there ) was an American singer-songwriter .

Career

He began his career with the folk trio Cumberland Three . In 1961, after Dave Guard left, he became a member of the Kingston Trio . He left the trio in 1967 and went on solo after writing the hit Daydream Believer , which landed The Monkees a number 1 hit. In 1968 he supported Robert F. Kennedy's presidential campaign , which he reported in his song The Last Campaign . On the support tour he met the folk singer Buffy Ford, with whom he was married until his death. He died of a stroke.

Over the years he released numerous solo albums. His most successful album, Bombs Away Dream Babies , was released in 1979 and contained his biggest hit. The single gold rose to number 5 on the US hit parade. On this single, Stevie Nicks sang in the background and Lindsey Buckingham played guitar.

Thematically, Stewart orientated himself in his texts on American myths, which he contrasted with the reality of life in American society, "the Jekyll & Hyde sides of the white American middle-class dream". Musically, his ballads were in the folk and country tradition.

In addition to the frequently covered Daydream Believer , other songs by John Stewart were also interpreted by prominent folk and country singers, including Joan Baez , Rosanne Cash , Nanci Griffith and Tommy Makem . His songs have also been used in films. He sang his song Ticket for the Wind in the movie Das Auskochte Schlitzohr III .
