John Stillwell
John Colin Stillwell (born August 12, 1942 in Melbourne ) is an Australian mathematician .
Life
Stillwell graduated from the University of Melbourne (Masters degree in 1965) and received his PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1970. He then taught at Monash University in Melbourne from 1970 and has been a professor at the University of San Francisco since 2002 .
Stillwell has emerged through several textbooks and various articles in which he teaches mathematics according to the historical method about their history, in particular "Mathematics and its history". In 2005 he received the Chauvenet Prize for "The Story of the 120-Cell". He also translated classical works by Richard Dedekind , Henri Poincaré , Peter Gustav Lejeune Dirichlet and Max Dehn, among others .
He also deals with combinatorial group theory and its geometric applications.
Stillwell was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) in Zurich in 1994 ( Number theory as a core mathematical discipline ). He is a fellow of the American Mathematical Society .
