John Stuart came from an old branch of the House of Stuart . He was the eldest son of John Stuart , eldest son of the 3rd Earl of Bute , and his first wife, Charlotte Hickman-Windsor. His father was raised to Baron Cardiff in 1776 and inherited the title of Earl of Bute in 1792 . John therefore carried the courtesy title Viscount Mount Stuart as his apparently marriage from 1792 .

By marrying the heiress of the Windsor family, his father had acquired considerable real estate in south-east Wales, which is why he ensured that his eldest son was elected in 1790 as MP for Cardiff in the House of Commons , where he was a member of the Tories . In 1791 Stuart became Colonel of the Glamorgan Militia and in 1793, succeeding his father, Lord Lieutenant of Glamorgan. After the death of his grandfather, the 3rd Earl of Bute, the former Prime Minister, his father tried to promote him politically through his contacts with William Windham and the Duke of Portland , but John fell off his horse during a hunt in December 1793 and died one A month later on the episodes.
Stuart had married Lady Elizabeth Penelope McDowall-Crichton on October 12, 1792 , the only daughter of Patrick McDouall-Crichton, 6th Earl of Dumfries and his wife Margaret Crauford . He left a five month old son, John Stuart , who later became his grandfather's heir as the 2nd Marquess of Bute . Eight months after his death, his second son James was born.
Remarks
- ↑ The courtesy title should actually have been after the corresponding subordinate titles of his father Viscount of Kingart or Lord Mount Stuart . Why he incorrectly linked these titles to Viscount Mount Stuart as a courtesy title is unclear.
