John T. Knox

John Theryll Knox (born September 30, 1924 in Reno , Nevada , † April 4, 2017 in Richmond , California ) was an American politician and lawyer . He was a member of the California State Assembly and Speaker Pro Tempore from 1960 to 1980 . Knox was a member of the Democratic Party .

Knox was born in Reno in 1924 and moved to California with his parents in 1929. He served in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II . He received his bachelor's degree from Occidental College and his law degree from Hastings College of the Law . Knox was inducted into the California Bar Association in 1953 and worked as a lawyer in Richmond, where he died in April 2017 after a long illness.

Honors

A six and a half mile stretch of Interstate 580 , which runs from the Richmond – San Rafael Bridge to Richmond, is officially known as the John T. Knox Freeway . The Knox-Nisbet Act of 1963 made this route possible.
