John Udny
Giorgio Giovanni (John) Udny (* 1850 in Livorno ; † 1927 in Genoa ) was an Italian sculptor of Scottish descent.
life and work
The eldest son of Roberto Udny and Enrichetta Achiardi is a descendant of the Scots John Udny (1755-1802), formerly the British consul in Livorno. He learned his trade in the workshop of his uncle Giovanni, a marble dealer. On the famous Cimitero monumentale di Staglieno some grave monuments have been preserved from his hand. His most famous work is a statue of the poet Robert Burns in white Carrara marble , commissioned by Scottish emigrants for the city of Ballarat , Victoria , Australia . John Udny made it in Livorno after an engraving by the poet.
