John Walker (art historian)

John Walker (born December 24, 1906 in Pittsburgh , † October 16, 1995 in Amberly , West Sussex ) was an American art historian , curator and museum director.

Life

Walker studied art history at Harvard University in the 1920s . He received a scholarship to stay with the art historian Bernard Berenson at his Villa I Tatti near Florence . From 1935 to 1939 Walker was a professor of art history at the American Academy in Rome . From 1956 to 1969 he was the successor to David E. Finley, Jr. Museum Director of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC After a professional career that lasted until 1969, he lived in Florida , Fishers Island, New York City , and England . Walker had been married to British diplomat Margaret Drummond since 1937 .
