John Whichelo
Charles John Mayle Whichelo , usually referred to as John Whichelo , (* 1784 in Kensington , London , † August 2, 1865 in Anglesey Abbey , Cambridgeshire ) was a British naval and landscape painter .
Life
Whichelo was the eldest child of the brewer Richard Mayle Whichelo (1760-1815) and his wife Ann (nee Wood, 1764-1815). He was baptized on December 28, 1784 in St. Nicholas Church in Brighton .
He was believed to have been a student of Cornelius Varley and Joshua Cristall . Among other things, he painted together with Frederick Nash (1782-1856) and George "Sidney" Shepherd (1784-1862) for the illustration of Thomas Pennant's six-volume special edition The Fauntleroy Pennant from 1805 for the History of London . From 1810 he also exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts . He worked as a marine and landscape painter for Prince Regent Georg IV . In 1823 he became a member of the Royal Watercolor Society and took part in their exhibitions until his death.
His painting by Admiral Nelson , which he gave to British Admiral William Parker, became famous. Whichelo's works are in the collections of the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum .
He was the father of the landscape painter Henry Mayle Whichelo (1926–1867).
