John Williams (politician, 1740)

John Williams (born July 7, 1740 in Hanover County , Colony of Virginia , † December 1804 in Caswell County , North Carolina ) was an American politician and officer during the Revolutionary War .

Williams is a 1775 delegate to the North Carolina Provincial Congress. After the War of Independence broke out, he enlisted in the Continental Army . He held the rank of colonel there . During the war he also served in the House of Representatives from 1778 to 1780 and then in the North Carolina Senate in 1782 . After the war he was State Senator again from 1793 to 1794.

Williams' cousin John of the same name was a delegate to the Continental Congress for North Carolina. His grandson Christopher Harris Williams was a Congressman for Tennessee, and his great-grandson John Sharp Williams represented the State of Tennessee in the US Senate .
