John Wise (politician)

John Wise PC (born December 12, 1935 in Saint Thomas , Ontario ; † January 9, 2013 ) was a Canadian politician of the Progressive Conservative Party (PC), who was a member of the House of Commons for almost 16 years and between 1979 and 1980 Minister of Agriculture in the 21st Canadian Cabinet of Prime Minister Joe Clark was. He held the office of Minister of Agriculture again from 1984 to 1988 in the 24th Cabinet of Canada under Prime Minister Brian Mulroney .

Life

Wise was a dairy farmer by profession and began his political career in local politics when he was Reeve of Yarmouth between 1968 and 1969 . In the election of October 30, 1972 , he was elected for the first time for the Progressive Conservative Party as a member of the House of Commons and represented in this until November 20, 1988 for 16 years the constituency of Elgin . At the beginning of his membership of the House of Commons he was from October 9, 1974 to 1976 spokesman for the PC group for the dairy industry and then from 1976 to 1983 group spokesman for agriculture.

On June 4, 1979, Prime Minister Joe Clark appointed him to the 21st Cabinet of Canada as Secretary of Agriculture, which he served until the end of Clark's tenure on March 2, 1980. After the election of the Progressive Conservative Party in the general election of September 4, 1984 , Wise was reappointed Minister of Agriculture on September 17, 1984 by Prime Minister Brian Mulroney. He held this ministerial office until September 14, 1988.
