John Yonge (* 1466 or 1467 in Upper Heyford , Oxfordshire , † April 25, 1516 in London ) was an English diplomat and lawyer.

Life

Yonge grew up in Rye , East Sussex . Nothing is known about his parents. At the age of eleven he was admitted to Winchester College on September 29, 1478 . On January 30, 1484 he moved to the New College of Oxford University . From 1486 to 1500 he was a fellow there and received his bachelor's degree around 1494 . Then he traveled to Bologna to continue his studies. In 1500 he was accepted at the University of Ferrara where he received his doctorate in canon law . After completing his training, he entered the service of the Church and the Crown. It was not until January 28, 1504, however, before he was hired by William Warham , then Archbishop of Canterbury . That same year, he was sent on his first diplomatic mission, in which he contracts with I. Philip had to negotiate. In 1506 he was involved in the negotiations about the marriage of Henry VII . In addition to his work as a diplomat, he was also awarded a number of benefices . For example, from 1503 he was pastor in the Church of Saint Stephen, Walbrook and from 1505 in the Church of St Mary-le-Bow , both in London. On January 22, 1508 Henry VII appointed him Master of the Rolls . Yonge took on other diplomatic missions. In July 1508 he traveled to the court of Maximilian I. After Henry VIII had ascended the throne, Yonge kept his post as Master of the Rolls and also continued his diplomatic work. A trip to the court of Louis XIII. in 1511 was not very successful. In spite of everything, he was able to accumulate further benefices and his reputation continued to grow. Erasmus of Rotterdam dedicated a translation of Plutarch's De tuenda valetudine to him in 1513 . He also accumulated more and more church offices. On a trip to France, Yonge fell seriously ill and died of a fever on his return to London on April 25, 1516 . He was buried in the chapel of the Master of the Rolls, today's Maughan Library , where an image made by Pietro Torrigiano still commemorates him.
