Cuthbert Tunstall (1474–1559), Bishop of Durham

Cuthbert Tunstall (* 1474 in Hackforth in Yorkshire , † November 18, 1559 in Lambeth Palace ) was an English bishop of Durham .

Life

Tunstall studied theology and philosophy at Balliol College , Oxford and Trinity College , Cambridge . In 1499 he went to Padua to continue his studies there. In 1505 he returned to England after a visit to Rome and entered the service of the Archbishop of Canterbury , William Warham . In 1522 he became Bishop of London . King Henry VIII , who used him as a diplomat, appointed him Bishop of Durham in 1530 and put him in his will as a member of the Regency Council. Tunstall complied with the king's break with Rome , but tried to maintain as far as possible an accord between the Church of England and the Holy See . This policy cost him under Edward VI. the position in the government. In 1551 he was imprisoned. A year later, his episcopate was withdrawn. In 1553, Maria I Tudor reinstated him and charged him with dealing with the question of Protestant bishops. Tunstall proceeded with laudable restraint. After Elizabeth I Tudor ascended to the throne , however, his rigid rejection of her religious innovations put him out of favor with the queen. He refused the oath of supremacy to swear and refused to Matthew Parker to Archbishop of Canterbury to consecrate. Tunstall was removed from office for the second time and placed under house arrest at Lambeth Palace , where he died a few weeks later.
