John Yudkin (born August 8, 1910 in London , † July 12, 1995 ibid) was an English physiologist and nutritionist .

Life

Yudkin was in London's East End , the son of an Orthodox Jewish born family in 1905 before pogroms in Russia had fled. His father died when he was six years old. His mother raised the five sons under difficult conditions. In 1933 he married Milly Himmelweit, who had come to England from Germany because of the threat of persecution of the Jews. The marriage lasted more than 60 years. The couple had three sons.

His career came to an early end, mainly due to the influence of lobbyists in the food industry , especially advocates of the fat hypothesis .

Act

He did his doctorate under Marjorie Stephenson (1885–1948) in bacteriology and has already received international scientific recognition. However, his interest was in nutritional science. In the 1930s, the only way to work in this area was as a doctor. In 1938 Yudkin worked at the Dunn Nutrition Laboratory and researched vitamin A and riboflavin . He examined the links between sugar in the diet and various degenerative diseases. During the Second World War he served as a military doctor in West Africa, where he undertook further studies.

In 1945 he became professor of physiology at the University of London . He advised the government of the young state of Israel on food issues and was a dedicated rector of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem . It is thanks to him that the University of London has established a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science degree in nutritional science. From 1954 until his retirement in 1972 he was Professor of Nutrition Science in London.

Since 1957 he has shown that the consumption of sugar and sugary sweeteners is closely related to coronary heart disease . He became internationally known through his book Pure, White and Deadly , which was published in German in 1974 under the title Sweet, but dangerous .

Robert H. Lustig , professor of pediatric endocrinology with a focus on obesity in children, sees Yudkin as a pioneer who recognized the harmful effects of sugar long before the underlying physiological processes were known. He provided the last edition of the book Pure, White and Deadly from 1986 with its own foreword and initiated a new edition in 2012.
