John o 'Groats ( Scottish Gaelic Taigh Iain Ghròt ) is a place in the county of Caithness on the northeastern tip of Scotland and is now part of the Highland Council Area . It has about 300 inhabitants (2007).

Actually, it is not the northernmost point of the British main island; this is Dunnet Head and is a little further west, but has no town. John o 'Groats is located in the north-south axis just a little over two kilometers to the south, but still almost 25 km further east of this land point on the northeastern tip of Scotland. Since this the felt - because farthest - "actual" other country end of the range-size to Land's End (which is also not the southernmost point is, this is Lizard Point ) represents the village is the measure of all distances in the UK: "Once across the country ”is synonymous with“ From John o 'Groats to Land's End ”.

These 874 miles (1406 km) are the furthest direct road distance between any two locations on the main island. This corresponds to the distance between Hamburg and Monaco.

Directly east of John o 'Groats is Duncansby Head , famous for its spectacular rock pinnacles, the Duncansby Stacks, and as a nesting site for many rare seabirds, including puffins .

The name John o 'Groats is said to be derived from the Dutchman Jan de Groot, who was granted ferry rights to the offshore Orkney Islands in 1496 . The islands had only recently been owned by the Scottish Crown . De Groot asked for a fee of four pence for the ferry transport. The related coin became known as a groat .

Jan de Groot is said to have built an octagonal house for himself and his sons and set up an octagonal table in it, so that everyone could sit at one end and thus everyone was equal.

In 2007, John o 'Groats actors Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman began their Long Way Down .

John o 'Groats is the end point of the classic car rally "LE-JOG".
