Johnny Acea
John "Johnny" Adriano Acea (born October 11, 1917 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , † July 25, 1963 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) was an American jazz pianist .
Acea came from a Cuban family who settled in Philadelphia around 1910. He first played the trumpet and worked as a freelance musician in the late 30s. a. at Sammy Price ; then he switched to the tenor saxophone and played with Doc Bagley. In the early 1940s he went to New York . In the mid-1940s he switched to the piano and played in various groups. 1947/48 he played with Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis , with whom he appeared in Minton's Playhouse ; In 1950 he was a member of the Dizzy Gillespie Big Band . In the early 1950s he accompanied James Moody , Jacquet , Dinah Washington and IllinoisCootie Williams ; In 1954 he followed Jacquet on a European tour. As a studio musician, Acea has made recordings by musicians such as Dizzy Gillespie, James Moody, Illinois Jacquet, Al Sears , Joe Newman , Eddie Jefferson and Grant Green . According to Feather / Gitler, he died in the late 1980s.
