Joint Inquiry into Intelligence Community Activities before and after the Terrorist Attacks of September 11, 2001

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Joint Inquiry into Intelligence Community Activities before and after the Terrorist Attacks of September 11, 2001 (American original name, in German: Joint investigation of the activities of the secret services before and after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 ) is the name of the dated Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence , two subcommittees of the US Senate and House of Representatives , conducted an investigation into the activities of US intelligence services in connection with the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks . It began in February 2002 and submitted its final report including the minority votes in December 2002. In December 2013, it became known that 28 pages of this report had been censored. Senators Walter Jones and Stephen Lynch requested its publication.

Committee mandate, members

In December 2001, Senate resolutions called for an independent investigation while President George W. Bush preferred an investigation by the Congressional Intelligence Committee . Vice-Presidents Dick Cheney , Tom Daschle and Condoleezza Rice reached this committee in consultation , the establishment of which was announced on February 14, 2002.

The Democratic Senator Bob Graham and the Republican MP Porter Goss (both from Florida ) as well as deputy (actually: representative of the minority party) the Republican Senator Richard Shelby ( Alabama ) and the Democratic MP Nancy Pelosi ( California ) were the chairmen of the committees of inquiry. L. Britt Snider , the former "inspector general" of the CIA (about: Inspector for the CIA), worked as a director for the staff group of the committee. He had been proposed for this by George Tenet .

Hearings

The hearings of the committee of inquiry took place on September 18, 19, 20, 24, 26, 2002 and on October 1, 3, 8 and 17, 2002.

Initially unpublished pages

In an interview with the WDR broadcast Monitor , Graham confirmed the assumptions made earlier that the section, which is often referred to as "28 pages", has a clear connection to Saudi Arabia .

These 28 pages, censored in 2002, were released 14 years after the report was first published. According to the US government, these previously blacked out data would show no connection between Saudi Arabia and the kidnappers. In the American media, however, there were dissenting views that some of the kidnappers had received support from people connected with the Saudi government. The approved pages were published in full (still not fully approved) at 28pages.org

Result and evaluation

The report was finalized and issued with no information on what President Bush might know about the threat prior to September 11, 2001.
