Jonas Gricius

Jonas Gricius (born August 5, 1928 in Kaunas , Lithuania , † February 1, 2021 in Vilnius , Lithuania) was a Soviet or Lithuanian cinematographer who oversaw various international cinema productions, including films such as The Blue Bird , Wechsel or The Department .

life and career

Jonas Augustino Gricius, born in Lithuania in 1928, began his career at the beginning of the 1950s as a camera assistant. In 1954 he graduated from the Gerassimow Institute for Cinematography , a course taught by Boris Woltschek . He worked in the Lenfilm film studio as an assistant to director Andrei Moskvin . He had been the operator of the Lithuanian Film Studio (LKS) from 1958 before he was the chief cameraman in charge of his first feature film at the end of the 1950s. In the 1960s he worked with directors such as Raimondas Vabalas , Grigori Kosinzew , Arūnas Žebriūnas or Vytautas Žalakevičius . In the 1970s he photographed George Cukor's dramatic adventure film The Blue Bird with Elizabeth Taylor , Jane Fonda and Cicely Tyson in the lead roles, as well as the drama Change by Raimondas Vabalas. In the 1980s followed films such as Alexei Simonow's war drama The Department , and Arūnas Žebriūnas historical drama Chas Polnoluniya . In 1992 he ended his career as a cameraman with the short film Išakėtas krantas for director Tomas Donela .

From 1963 to 1968 he was secretary of the LSSR Cinematographers Union and from 1981 to 1988 its chairman. From 1978 to 1989 he was the director of the Lithuanian film studio. Gricius died on February 1, 2021 at the age of 92.
