Life

Stadling's parents were farmers Jon Jönsson and Hedvig Stadling . From 1869 to 1973 Stadling attended the so-called "Betelseminariet" in Stockholm , a training seminar founded in 1866 for Baptist preachers. In the following years (1875–1878) Stadling studied in Gothenburg , Geneva and Manchester . From 1880 to 1883, Stadling traveled through America.

From 1891 Stadling was employed by the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet . In his articles he dealt with, among other things, the situation of the Sámi as well as other important issues concerning the Norrland region . In the winter of 1892-1893 he supported Leo Tolstoy in his fight against the famine in Russia.

In 1897 he accompanied Salomon August Andrée to Spitzbergen (see main article: Andrées polar expedition of 1897 ). Together with the engineer K. Frænkel and the botanist HN Nilson, he undertook a year later, from April to December 1898, a reconnaissance expedition to Northern Siberia to collect information about Andrée's whereabouts after his balloon trip to the North Pole.

Stadling dealt with the journey with the unsuccessful search for Andrée in his book “Genom Sibirien. På spaning efter Andrée ”.
