Matthias Bredenbach

Matthias Bredenbach (* 1499 in Kierspe ; † June 5, 1559 in Emmerich ; also: Breidbach, Brempke ) was a German Catholic humanist and educator .

Life

Matthias Bredenbach, born in Kierspe in 1499 (the years 1500 and 1490 were also in circulation earlier), received training at a grammar school in Münster and then studied at the University of Cologne from 1521 . After he had obtained the academic degree of a Magister artium in 1524 , he was appointed lecturer at the grammar school in Emmerich the following year . In 1533 he was promoted to headmaster of the school, which now numbered around 1,500 students. On June 5, 1559 he died in Emmerich; he held the office of rector until his death.

Bredenbach had a good knowledge of Latin , Greek and Hebrew and gave lectures on the Bible. His son Tilmann , who was born in 1535, was a doctor of theology , canon of St. Gereon's Church in Cologne and died in 1587.
