Jonathan Agnew MBE (born April 4, 1960 in Macclesfield , Cheshire ) is a former English cricketer who now works as a radio commentator for Test Match Special .

Athletic career

Agnew played first-class cricket for Leicestershire in the County Championship from 1978 to 1990 . As a fast bowler , he achieved 666 wickets in 218 games. He was also used in 147 List A matches .

In 1984/85 he played in three test matches and three one-day internationals for England without having any particular success. The English team were in a difficult phase at the time after suffering massive defeats against the West Indies .

He had his best season in 1987 when he scored 101 wickets. The following year he was nominated as one of the five Wisden Cricketers of the Year . He ended his career very early for a cricketer at the age of 30.

In 1992 he played again in the Natwest Trophy final when Leicestershire was severely injured. However, his team lost.

commentator

Having already in his time as a commentator for BBC Radio Leicester, a local radio program the BBC had been working, Agnew was 1990 cricket correspondent of the short-lived newspaper Today.

He has been working for the BBC since 1991. The year before, he had already joined the reporter team for Test Match Special , the world's most famous live report in cricket, in which test matches and one-day internationals of the English team are broadcast. His nickname there is Aggers .

After Brian Johnston's death , he became the BBC's chief cricket reporter in 1994. Since then he has also headed the Test Match Special Team. His discussions and joint live reports with former English player and current commentator Geoffrey Boycott are widely appreciated.
