Jonathan Charles Bartley (born October 16, 1971 in London ) is a British politician . Since September 2, 2016 he has been one of the two party leaders of the Green Party of England and Wales . First he shared the position with Caroline Lucas and since September 4, 2018 with Siân Berry . He was also the Greens' spokesman for work and pensions.

Childhood and family

Bartley was born on October 16, 1971 in London. His father was Christopher Bartley, an NHS medical consultant and a Normandy veteran .

Bartley attended Dulwich College from 1980 to 1989 and, after graduating from high school, the London School of Economics and Political Science , which he graduated in 1994.

life and career

After graduating, Bartley worked for several years as a cross-party researcher and parliamentary assistant in the UK Parliament. He was a member of John Major's campaign team in the election of Conservative Party leader against John Redwood .

In 2002, Bartley co-founded Ekklesia , a Christian think tank dedicated to "the changing role of beliefs, values, and belief / non-belief in public life". In 2008 he was also a co-founder of the Accord Coalition , which works to eradicate religious discrimination in the English and Welsh school systems.

He is a regular contributor to BBC One 's The Big Questions. Previously, he was on BBC Radio 4's “Thought for the Day” and ITV's “The Moral of the Story” and was a columnist for the Church Times. He was a guest on BBC Radio 4's The Moral Maze and has written for The Guardian newspaper . He also has the Green Party of England and Wales represented in the media, including the welfare debate, the BBC in the general election in 2015 , he in the former work and pensions minister Iain Duncan Smith from the Conservative Party collided.

Incident with David Cameron

On April 27, 2010, while Bartley and his son Samuel were waiting for a hospital appointment at Evelina London Children's Hospital , a Conservative Party representative asked if he would like to meet then-party leader David Cameron . Bartley agreed, and Party officials brought Cameron to him.

Bartley then criticized him for saying that the conservative education plans would increase the marginalization of disabled children, as there was talk of ending the inclusion of children with special needs in mainstream schools . In relation to his own two-year attempt to get his son a place in mainstream school, Bartley also asked why the Conservative Party did not encourage children with disabilities to attend mainstream school. Cameron said: "That's absolutely certain, sir, I promise you". However, a Channel 4 fact check subsequently disproved Cameron's claim.

Career with the Greens

In 2012, Bartley was selected as the Green's candidate for Lambeth and Southwark constituencies for the London Assembly elections and won over 18,000 votes. Bartley also acted as the party's press officer .

In 2014, Bartley served in St. Leonard 's Ward on Lambeth Council as a candidate for the Green Party of England and Wales . He finished fifth.

Bartley was the Green's nominee for the London constituency of Streatham in the 2015 general election and received 4,421 votes (8.9 percent) compared to 1.8 percent in the 2010 general election .

Bartley ran within his party as the top candidate for the Mayoral elections in London in 2016 , but was defeated by Siân Berry . He ran successfully together with Caroline Lucas for the election of the party chairman. Bartley and Lucas clearly prevailed with 13,570 votes against David Malone, who got 956 votes. In 2018 Bartley was confirmed in office, this time together with Siân Berry.

On May 3, 2018, Bartley was elected a Green Councilor for St. Leonard 's Ward on Lambeth Council. There he is group leader and opposition leader in the council.

In the course of the 2019 general election, Bartley ran in the constituency of Dulwich and West Norwood , where he came in second with 16.5 percent of the vote, ahead of the Conservative Party candidate . The Liberal Democrats waived their own candidate in favor of Bartley.

Political positions

Bartley is particularly committed to the inclusion of children with disabilities in school . Among other things, he is chairman of the Center for Studies on Inclusive Education (CSIE). Bartley is opposed to the United Kingdom's current majority suffrage for lower house elections and campaigned for the introduction of proportional representation during the 2011 UK suffrage referendum . He advocates a ban on halal slaughter .

Bartley rejects the use of nuclear energy , which he considers obsolete, and advocates increased investment in renewable energy . He advocates a fracking ban .

Bartley rejects Brexit and promised that his party would campaign for a second referendum.
