Jonker JS1 Revelation and Jonker JS1-TJ Jet Sustainer are single-seat gliders of the FAI 18m class made of plastic reinforced with glass , carbon and aramid fibers ("Kevlar"). The successor, the Jonker JS1-C Revelation, has a wingspan that is three meters longer and therefore flies in the open class .
history
The South African aircraft manufacturer, Jonker Sailplanes, was founded in 2004 by the two brothers Attie and Uys Jonker. The maiden flight of the JS1 took place on December 12, 2006, the JS1-C took off for the first time on March 22, 2012. The designer of the JS1 is Attie Jonker, the surface profile was developed by Johan Bosman in collaboration with the TU Delft .
technology
The four-part wing is equipped with flaperons over the full span , has winglets and three-tier Schempp-Hirth brake flaps . The aircraft is designed for performance flight and can be optionally equipped with an engine. Some design features are:
- Blow turbulators in the wings to minimize drag.
- The wing profile was specially designed for this series and has a maximum relative thickness of only 12.7%.
- Patented cockpit suction "JS Louvred Air Extractor"
- A turbine drive as a "lull pusher" for the JS1-TJ. A version of the JS1 with a self-starter is under development.
use
In 2008, Attie Jonker won the 18-meter class at the South African National Championships with a JS1 Revelation. Since then, national and international competitions have been won annually ( as of March 2014 ) or finished in the top places.
Incidents
On April 29, 2012, a Jonker JS1-B crashed in the US after the pilot lost control of the rudder in the air. He was able to save himself with the parachute.
