Joonas Rinne gained his first international experience in 2011 when he retired from the European Youth Olympic Festival in Trabzon in the 800-meter run with 1: 53.93 minutes in the first round. In 2019 he took part in the 1500 meter run at the Summer Universiade in Naples , where he won the bronze medal in 3: 54.02 minutes behind Michał Rozmys from Poland and Jan Friš from the Czech Republic.
In 2017 and 2019, Rinne was Finnish champion in the 1,500-meter run outdoors and in 2017 and 2018 also indoors. In addition, he became indoor champion over 800 meters in 2020.
