The Jordan spring is a karst spring in Bad Lippspringe ( Paderborn district ). It forms the source of the Jordan River .

location

The Jordan spring is located on the northeast edge of the Jordan Park in Bad Lippspringe, on the western foothills of the Eggegebirge , only about 400 meters northeast (as the crow flies) from the much better known Lippequelle in the neighboring Arminius Park . The source is at an altitude of 142  m above sea level. NHN . The road to An der Jordanquelle runs southeast of the source .

Data

The Jordan spring rises from 3 spring outlets that are framed with quarry stones. Its water feeds the approximately 20-meter-long Jordan before it flows into the Thunebach coming from the right , which takes its name from the Jordan due to the wealth of water in the lower reaches. The water of the karst spring comes from seepage of the Beke and Durbeke in the fissured limestone of the western foothills of the Egge Mountains. In Bad Lippspringe it reappears at the border of the water-permeable karst and Emscher marl (a water-impermeable layer) and rises from great depths.

The flow of the Jordan Spring averages 300 liters per second, but it fluctuates strongly. In various experiments it turned out that the Jordan spring is connected to the Lippe spring underground. If the water level of the Lippe spring falls, the water level of the Jordan spring also falls. In dry summers it even falls dry. This also happened, for example, when the water level of the Lippequelle was lowered due to construction work on the occasion of the 2017 State Garden Show.

Various diving and floating leaf plants as well as spring moss grow in the Jordan spring .

Origin of name

In the Jordan, Charlemagne is said to have carried out the so-called Saxon baptism in 776. Carrying out such a baptism was a condition of Charlemagne in order to consent to the Saxon submission to end the Saxon Wars .
