Jorge Horacio Zorreguieta Stefanini (born January 28, 1928 in Buenos Aires ; † August 8, 2017 there ) was an Argentine politician and the father of Queen Máxima of the Netherlands .

Life

He was born the son of the banker Juan Antonio Zorreguieta Bonorino (1899-1959) and Cesina Stefanini Borella (1901-1999), daughter of a native Genoese . His grandfather was Amadeo Zorreguieta Hernandez, Lord Mayor of Mendoza and Minister of Public Works of the Province of Mendoza , who was married to Máxima Blanca Bonorino Gonzalez (1874-1965), daughter of Máxima González y de Islas, a relative of the Argentine President Justo José de Urquiza († 1870).

Jorge Zorreguieta's great-grandfather was Mariano Zorreguieta Maurin (1830-1893), President of the Senate of the Argentine province of Salta , an illegitimate grandson of the wealthy merchant José Antonio de Sorreguieta y Oyarzabal, Gamboa y Sagastume, who lived in 1777 in northern Spain ( Basque ) Juan Antonio Tolosa Sorreguieta y Gamboa was born and came to Salta in Argentina in 1790 .

Jorge Zorreguieta was admitted to hospital for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and pneumonia and died on August 8, 2017 of complications from the lymphatic cancer .

Marriages and children

Jorge Zorreguieta was married twice and had seven children from these two marriages. The 1956 marriage with Martha López Gil (* 1935) was divorced. His best-known daughter, from his marriage to María del Carmen Cerruti Carricart (* 1944), which has existed since May 27, 1970, is Máxima (* 1971) who was married to King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands. Zorreguieta was not allowed to attend his daughter's wedding in 2002 because of his past linked to the Argentine military dictatorship .

He also had to stay away from the enthronement of his son-in-law on April 30, 2013.

Jorge Zorreguieta was State Secretary from 1976 to 1979 and then Minister for Agriculture until 1981 in the dictatorship of Jorge Rafael Videla .

Accuse

In 2001, the Dutch public prosecutor rejected a complaint against Zorreguieta because of his role in the dictatorship. The reason was a lack of competence.

On September 7, 2011, the Dutch public prosecutor's office confirmed that a lawsuit had been brought against Zorreguieta in connection with the disappearance of doctor Samuel Leonardo Slutzky . This has been made possible by changes to various laws since 2001.
