José Barrias

José Barrias (born June 14, 1944 in Lisbon , Portugal , † June 6, 2020 in Milan , Italy ) was a Portuguese artist .

José Barrias was born in Lisbon in 1944 as the son of the painter Miguel Barrias and lived in Porto from 1950 to 1967 , where he also studied at the local art school. In 1967 and 1968 he lived in Paris , after which he moved to Milan, where he lived until his death.

His work includes sculptures, paintings , texts, films , drawings and photography .

He had his first solo exhibition in 1972; others followed, especially in Portugal and Italy, for example in Lisbon in 1996, in Porto in 2011 and in Bragança in 2016 . His last exhibition during his lifetime was in Guimarães in 2019 .

He represented Portugal at the Paris Art Biennials in 1980 and Venice in 1984.

A well-known work is the painting "Rhinoceros Unicornis", which is located in Turin and dates from 1972. In terms of content, it deals with the gift of a rhinoceros from the Portuguese king to the Pope in the 16th century. Many works have autobiographical references. In 1996 he received the Aica Prize.

Barrias died on June 6, 2020 at the age of 75 in his adopted home of Milan.
