José Carlos Mariátegui Arellano (born July 21, 1929 in Lima , † November 9, 2006 ibid) was a Peruvian ambassador .

Life

José Carlos Mariátegui Arellano was the son of Esther Arellano and José Francisco Mariátegui Ausejo. He married Genoveva de Ascásubi. Their children were José Ignacio, María Victoria, María Pía, José Antonio and José Joaquín. He entered the foreign service in 1948 and in 1952 received a Bachelor of Arts from the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú , studied law at the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos and became a reserve officer .

On May 21, 1952, he was appointed attaché and assigned to the consular department. In 1954 he was assigned to the political department and headed the consulate in Hamburg . Subsequently, he served at the Embassy in Quito . In 1960 he was appointed head of the Consulate General in Bogotá . 1961 was transferred to the permanent representation of Peru at the UN headquarters . In 1963 he was transferred to Lisbon . In 1965 he was employed by the Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office in Geneva . In 1967 he became head of the international trade department. In 1969 he headed the Economic Integration Department.

On January 1, 1971, he was appointed ambassador to Tokyo , Taipei and Seoul . In 1975 he was sent as an ambassador by Augusto Pinochet . From 1978 he was ambassador in Brasília , Paramaribo and Georgetown (Guyana) . From 1980 to 1983 he was ambassador to Quito . In 1983 he was appointed State Secretary for Economic Affairs and Integration. In 1984 he was appointed Secretary General and Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs.

In 1985 he became Permanent Representative of the Peruvian Government to the United Nations Office in Geneva . In 1991 he headed the Academia Diplomática del Perú and the Instituto Peruano de Relaciones Internacionales (IPRI). He was a professor at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú and the Academia Diplomática del Perú . He was retired on May 28, 1992 , and released on December 22, 1996 after being held hostage at the Japanese embassy in Lima in 1996 .
