José Manuel Castela Viegas Carrascalão (born May 2, 1960 in Dili in Portuguese Timor ) is a politician from East Timor . He is vice-chairman of the Associação Social-Democrata de Timor (ASDT) and ASDT president in the municipality of Manatuto .

Life

José Manuel is the third eldest son of Manuel Carrascalão , the former President of the National Council, during the administration of East Timor by UNTAET . Several of the country's politicians come from the Carrascalão family and are active in various parties. Outside of his political work, José Manuel Carrascalão is a farmer. He attended elementary school for four years.

José Manuel Carrascalão was a member of the National Parliament of East Timor from 2007 . Here he was head of the parliamentary group of the ASDT, and a member of the Commission for Constitutional Affairs, Justice, Public Administration, Local Jurisprudence and Government Legislation (Commission A), Commission for Economy, Finance and Anti-Corruption (Commission C) and Commission for Infrastructure and Social institutions (Commission G).

At a party congress in early 2008, the ASDT asked its members, Tourism Minister Gil da Costa Alves and State Secretary for Environment Abílo de Deus de Jesus Lima , to dismiss. She accused both politicians of corruption , of being too close to the Indonesian military and business community, and of not representing the ideology of the ASDT. Prime Minister Gusmão refused to fire them, and in early May the ASDT signed an agreement with FRETILIN , the largest opposition party, on future cooperation. Carrascalão and the other members of the ASDT opposed the party's decision in parliament and threatened to continue working with the AMP if the ASDT left the governing coalition . The ASDT remained in the coalition until the end of the 2012 legislative period.

Carrascalão was sworn in as Deputy Minister for Infrastructure under Minister Pedro Lay in 2009 . In accordance with the law, he gave up his seat in parliament. The ASDT party leader Francisco Xavier do Amaral moved into parliament and also took over the chairmanship of the parliamentary group. In the parliamentary elections in East Timor in 2012 , the ASDT failed because of the three percent hurdle and Carrascalão lost his office as vice minister when the new government took office on August 8th.
