José Moreno Hernández (born August 7, 1962 in French Camp , California ) is a retired American astronaut .

Life

Youth and Studies

Hernández comes from a Mexican farming family who lived in Michoacán for the winter , but moved through California as a migrant worker from March to November. The children also went to local schools there, but had to work in the fields seven days a week during the summer holidays. A teacher persuaded Hernández's father to settle down and the family stayed in Stockton . It wasn't until the age of 12 that José learned English.

Hernández received his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the University of the Pacific at Stockton in 1984. On a scholarship, he studied at the University of California, Santa Barbara , where he received his master's degree in 1986.

Work as an engineer

From 1987 he worked at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore , where he had already worked as a student. In 2001 he moved to NASA at the Johnson Space Center in Houston .

Astronaut activity

Selection and training

Hernández made the decision to become an astronaut in high school in 1980 when he heard about the selection of Franklin Chang-Diaz , who is also Hispanic.

Hernández applied unsuccessfully to NASA in 1998 and 2000 as an astronaut. In the next round of applications in May 2003, he made the third attempt and was successful this time. On May 6, 2004 it was presented to the public along with 10 other applicants. The basic training lasted until February 2006, after which Hernández was assigned to the department that is responsible for launch and landing preparations for the space shuttle at the Kennedy Space Center .

STS-128

On July 15, 2008, Hernández was nominated as a mission specialist for the STS-128 space flight . It took off on August 29, 2009 and landed on September 12, 2009.

Hernández left NASA in January 2011 and went to MEI Technologies , where he is responsible for international cooperation.

Private

In December 2005, Hernández established the Jose Hernandez Reaching for the Stars Foundation , which promotes the education of talented young people.

In the 2012 congressional elections , Hernández is running as a Democrat for the seat of the outgoing Dennis Cardoza .

Hernández is married and has five children.
