José Ramón Medina Echavarría

José Ramón Medina Echavarría (born December 25, 1903 in Castellón de la Plana , † November 13, 1977 in Santiago de Chile ) was a Spanish sociologist .

Life

In his youth he was friends with José Gaos and Max Aub . From 1914 to 1920 he studied in Valencia and Barcelona. and from 1920 to 1926 law studies in Valencia and Madrid. In 1926 he enrolled at the University of Paris as a Fellow , where he studied the positivism of Auguste Comte and the sociology of Émile Durkheim . In 1930 he received his doctorate in law from the Complutense University of Madrid . His work La representación profesional en las asambleas legislativas deals with the socio-political situation of the dictatorship of Miguel Primo de Rivera .

From 1930 to 1931, José Medina Echavarría studied with Martin Heidegger at the Philipps University of Marburg and came into contact with the historicism of Wilhelm Dilthey and Erich Rothacker . He was interested in thinkers such as Hans Freyer , Karl Mannheim , Georg Simmel , Ferdinand Tönnies and the brothers Alfred Weber and Max Weber . From 1932 to 1936 was a judicial councilor in the second Spanish republic. During the Spanish Civil War he was the ambassador of Juan Negrín to Ignacy Mościcki in Warsaw.

In 1939 he emigrated to Mexico. There he first taught at the Casa de España . In 1940 he was a co-founder of the Colegio de México . On this he was the first director of the Centro de Estudios Sociales . He spent the winter of 1945 in Colombia and taught at the University of Puerto Rico from 1946 .

From August 1, 1952, he worked for the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean of the United Nations (CEPAL) in Santiago de Chile . In 1957 he became the first director of the Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales . From November 30, 1963 until his retirement on June 30, 1974, he headed the Department of Social Development of the Instituto Latinoamericano de Planificación Económica y Social (ILPES).
