Jos de Mey
Jos de Mey (born February 10, 1928 in Sint-Denijs-Westrem , Belgium , East Flanders Province , † December 22, 2007 in Ghent ) was a Flemish artist and graphic artist. De Mey studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent and became known for his pictures of "impossible" figures based on optical illusions. His surrealistic drawings are reminiscent of the works of MC Escher , René Magritte and Sandro Del-Prete .
He studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent from 1942 to 1949 , where he was employed as a teacher in 1950. He taught interior design and color harmony at the academy . In 1970, architecture training was spun off from the academy and so Mey became a lecturer at the new municipal higher architecture institute. He taught there until 1980. He was also a visiting lecturer at the Institute for Color Psychology in Salzburg several times.
In the 1950s and 1960s he had his own studio for interior design, color theory and furniture design. From 1968 he turned to the activity as a painter. During this time he went through a development that took him from abstract constructivism to realism with false perspectives and impossible figurative representations and constructions. The focus on architecture and nature in his works led him to spatial structure, questions of the incidence of light and matter.
De Mey lived in Zomergem .
