The Josef-Fredericks-Haus ( English Josef Fredericks' House ) is the historic home of Nama-Kaptein Josef Frederiks II. (Fredericks) in the Namibian town Bethanien in the region ǁKaras . It is considered one of the first permanent buildings by Europeans in Namibia.
It has been a National Monument of Namibia since June 15, 1951 .
history
The first Nama agreement with the Germans, represented by Gustav Nachtigal , was concluded in the building. It was the so-called fraudulent miles that sealed the beginning of German South West Africa in Lüderitzland . At the time, it served as a kind of parliament for the Bethany Nama Council .
Frederik's successor, Paul Frederiks, lived in a hut not far away, as Frederik's wife lived in the house after his death in 1893.
description
The little house was built of flat stone and mortar, with a camel thorn roof truss covered with reed and clay. Two doors and a central window mark the front, two windows and a door can be found on the back. It consists of four rooms with stone floors. A trilingual plaque commemorates the story:
"The building was erected in 1883 and was used by Captain Frederiks as a dwellinghouse and Council Chamber on October 28th, 1884. The German Government's first treaty was signed here by Frederiks and Dr Nachtigal."
In 1906 the house was confiscated by the Witboois and then served as a residence for many different people. Since 1990 it has been under the administration of the Nama.
