Josef Beck (diplomat)

Josef Beck (born February 1, 1953 in Bärenthal ) is a German diplomat and currently the German Consul General in Vancouver .

Life

Beck studied economics in Freiburg and Göttingen from 1972 and passed his diploma examination at the University of Göttingen in 1978. In 1979 and 1980 he completed postgraduate studies in international relations at the Institut Européen des Hautes Études Internationales in Nice.

From 1980 he worked for the Foreign Office in Bonn until he switched to the Permanent Representation of the Federal Republic of Germany to the European Union in Brussels in 1982 . Between 1984 and 1987 he was second secretary at the German embassy in Kinshasa ( Zaire ). He then worked until 1990 in the NATO department of the political department of the Federal Foreign Office. From 1990 to 1993 he was permanent representative at the German embassy in Quito ( Ecuador ) before he became counselor in the political department of the German embassy in Washington ( USA ). From 1996 to 1999 he was Deputy Head of Division in the Foreign Office. From 1999 he was permanent representative at the German Consulate General in Los Angeles until he became head of the economic department of the German Embassy in Prague in 2004. Subsequently, from 2008 to 2011 he was head of the department for the Andean countries and representative of the commissioner for Latin America and the Caribbean at the Federal Foreign Office.

From 2011 to 2014 he was Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Jamaica and at the same time accredited as Ambassador to the Bahamas and as Consul General for the British overseas territories Cayman Islands , Turks and Caicos Islands and as Permanent Representative of the Federal Republic of Germany to the International Seabed Authority based in Kingston. To promote social awareness of human rights in Jamaica, he signed a grant agreement on April 12, 2012 between the Federal Republic of Germany and the Jamaican human rights organization Jamaicans for Justice for the project "Human Rights Awareness Marketing and Promotionals Campaign", in which Germany is involved a grant of $ 62,000.

Beck is married and has two children.
