Josef Czikel

Josef Adolf Czikel (born February 7, 1873 in Stanislau , Galicia , Austria-Hungary ; † April 7, 1973 in Vienna , Austria ) was an officer in the Austro-Hungarian army and later a general in the Polish army .

Life

In 1900 he finished his training at the Theresian Military Academy in Wiener Neustadt . From November 1915 to November 1916 he commanded the 56th Infantry Regiment, and later he was chief of staff of the Košice Military District .

After the end of the First World War , Czikel was from February 1919 to March 1920 head of the general staff of the Kraków district. On May 25, 1919, he was admitted retrospectively from November 1915 with the rank of colonel in the Polish army . In March 1920 he took over command of the 8th Infantry Division there. On May 1, 1920 he advanced to the rank of lieutenant general , in June 1920 he was appointed deputy head of department in the Polish Ministry of Military Affairs, and in December he was appointed head of this department. In September 1921 he was entrusted with the position of chief of the army administration. On May 3, 1922, he attained the rank of major general ( division general ) and in August 1922 was commander of Corps District No. V in Krakow.

On November 15, 1923, the President of the Republic of Poland dismissed him from this position. The dismissal of Czikel was a direct result of the military intervention in the Kraków riots in 1923. On June 30, 1924, he was retired and sentenced to three months in prison by the Military Court No. V in Kraków.

From then on, Czikel lived in Cracow. During the German occupation he went to Vienna, where he died at the age of 101.
