Josef Ernst (theologian)

Josef Ernst (born March 7, 1926 in Gelsenkirchen ; † February 11, 2012 in Paderborn ) was a German Catholic theologian and New Testament scholar.

Life

Josef Ernst studied philosophy and Catholic theology and was ordained a priest in 1952 . He was initially active in pastoral care. At the same time he received his doctorate (1965) and habilitation (1968) with Otto Kuss at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich .

In 1967 he was offered a professorship for the exegesis of the New Testament at the theological faculty in Paderborn . From 1970 to 1971 he was rector of the theological faculty in Paderborn. In 1994 he retired.

Ernst was committed to ecumenical dialogue. He was a member of the scientific advisory board of the Johann Adam Möhler Institute for Ecumenism . From 1970 to 1977 he was involved in dialogue talks with the World Reformed Federation on behalf of the Papal Unity Secretariat . He was committed to a collaboration between the Paderborn Theological Faculty and the Evangelical Church University of Bethel .

Josef Ernst has published numerous essays and papers on New Testament topics.
