Josef Fontana

Josef Fontana (* 1937 in Neumarkt ) was a member of the South Tyrol Liberation Committee and is a South Tyrolean historian .

He grew up in Neumarkt, attended elementary school there and then learned the painting trade. In 1961 he was arrested for participating in the night of fire , only to be sentenced to a long prison term three years later in the Milan explosives trial. While in custody, he prepared for the school leaving examination, which he passed in Salzburg in 1970 . He later studied German , history and philosophy in Innsbruck . From 1977 to 1999 he wrote many papers on the history of Tyrol , especially from 1800 to 2000.
