action

Cass, a black Jamaican orphan, grew up with old white adoptive parents in the London borough of Slade Green ( London Borough of Bexley ) in the 1950s, long before "political correctness". Every day he is beaten up by his classmates because of his origin and skin color and discriminated against by his teachers. One day - he's already a young man - Cass's anger explodes and he decides never to be the victim again. As a fan of West Ham United , he joins the infamous Inter City Firm , a hooligan group around the club. He uses violence and hatred to gain the respect he has been denied for so long, he feels good in combat, that makes him strong and powerful. He quickly rises to become the leader of the hooligan gang - a tall, strong, black man to lead a white gang! This also makes him the preferred target of the police until one day the violence escalates. Under the Thatcher administration , the state began cracking down on hooligans. Cass is sentenced to four years in prison following an organized attack on Newcastle United supporters . He begins writing his biography in HM Prison Wormwood Scrubs . In the 1990s, during the ecstasy wave, he worked as a bouncer at a disco owned by his former hooligan comrade Ray. Old enemies will shoot him down one day. After a hospital stay, he has the opportunity to take revenge, but does not take it. He starts a civil life.

criticism

MovieMaze.de judges: "[...] in the end a very solid, but unfortunately only superficial and slow-paced insight into the psyche of a significant hooligan personality. Well meant, but not really convincing. "

The Stadionwelt-fans.de however, is fascinated: "Cass is much more than just a football movie, because in addition to the development of the English hooligan scene, brutal beatings he also shows the intricacies of the human character and its many opportunities for development. It is also about the meaning and impact of belonging to a group and the personal dynamics that this can evoke. It's about how violence creates counter-violence, how politics reacted to these movements, how important an intact home is, in short, how important it is to remain human. All of these topics are highlighted in this film - and that is why it is fair to say that the film is one of the milestones in social drama. "

additional

Pennant himself has a cameo role: as "Biggs", one of the bouncers.
