Josef Guilder

Josef Gülden CO (born August 24, 1907 in Neuwerk , today part of Mönchengladbach ; † January 24, 1993 in Leipzig ) was a German Catholic clergyman and journalist.

In his youth, Gülden was a member and functionary of the Catholic school organization Bund Neudeutschland (ND). From 1936 to 1939 he was editor of the journal Werkblätter of the ND-Älterenbundes.

On July 30, 1932, he was ordained a priest in Aachen; his first job as a chaplain was in Süchteln on the Lower Rhine. In 1934 he entered Leipzig in the Oratory of St. Philipp Neri a. The priestly community had been entrusted by the Bishop of Meissen with pastoral care in the parish of our Lady in Lindenau (Leipzig) since 1931 . In addition to tasks in the community, he also worked as a student chaplain and had been an advisor to the liturgical commission of the Fulda Bishops' Conference since 1940 .

With the other oratorians he was heavily involved in the liturgical movement . This included the celebration of Compline and Vespers in German and the restoration of the celebration of Easter Vigil . His journalistic activities in the GDR were also of great importance . He was a co-founder of the St. Benno publishing house in Leipzig and editor-in-chief of the church newspaper Tag des Herr and the only Catholic youth newspaper in the GDR, Christophorus . Many of the publisher's publications bore his signature.

At the 2nd Vatican Council , whose reforms he welcomed and had already prepared in the liturgical field in Leipzig, Gülden was an advisor to the then Bishop of Meißen, Otto Spülbeck . Until 1970 he was co-editor of the Liturgical Yearbook .

For the 50th anniversary of the Liturgical Commission, Gülden received the ring of honor from the German Liturgical Institute.
