József Grassy

József Grassy (born December 31, 1894 in Nagyszőlős ; †  November 5, 1946 in Žabalj , Vojvodina ) was a Hungarian officer in the Austro-Hungarian Army and a field marshal lieutenant in the Royal Hungarian Army . Most recently he commanded the 25th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS "Hunyadi" (Hungarian No. 1) as SS group leader and lieutenant general of the Waffen SS .

Life

From 1908 to 1912 Grassy attended the infantry school in Ödenburg . In 1914, he completed his training at the Ludovika Royal Military Academy in Budapest as a first lieutenant . Grassy took part in the Austro-Hungarian Army in World War I and received the Military Merit Cross III. Class and the Military Merit Medal in silver and bronze also both classes of the Iron Cross . After the end of the war he joined the Royal Hungarian Army, where he achieved the rank of major general. In 1941 he became deputy commander of the Hungarian Air Force .

During the Second World War , Grassy was involved as a general in the Novi Sad massacre in the Batschka in January 1942 .

In early 1944, Grassy went to Germany to avoid legal prosecution for his actions in Novi Sad. He joined the Waffen SS and was assigned to the 9th SS Panzer Division "Hohenstaufen" on March 1, 1944 . From November 1944 until the end of the war he was SS-Gruppenführer in command of the 25th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS "Hunyadi" (Hungarian No. 1) . At the same time he was commissioned on March 25, 1945 with the leadership of the 26th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS (Hungarian No. 2) .

In May 1945, Grassy became a US prisoner of war and was extradited to Yugoslavia in January 1946 . Here he was sentenced to death for war crimes and hanged together with Ferenc Szombathelyi and László Deák on November 5, 1946 in Žabalj .
