Josef Heinhold

Josef Heinhold (born July 4, 1912 in Düsseldorf ; † April 5, 2000 ) was a German mathematician , computer scientist , university lecturer and specialist book author .

Life

Josef Heinhold studied at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and received his doctorate in 1938 under Oskar Perron with a dissertation on generalization and tightening of a Minkowski sentence . He completed his habilitation in 1940 with the habilitation thesis "On the Geometry of Numbers" and then temporarily represented Richard Baldus' chair for geometry .

After the Second World War , Heinhold took over the extraordinary position of Josef Lense at the Technical University of Munich , after he had switched to the chair of Georg Faber .

In 1950 Heinhold was appointed associate professor and in 1955 he was appointed to a full professorship. He founded the Institute for Applied Mathematics and became its first director. In the same year Heinhold became managing director of the Society for Applied Mathematics and Mechanics (GAMM). In October 1955 , Alwin Walther organized the first international conference on computer development for Germany under the auspices of GAMM and the Telecommunications Society (NTG) . The speakers included a. Heinz Unger , Klaus Samelson , Sergei Alexejewitsch Lebedew and Bruno Thüring . A central theme was the project, as Nikolaus Joachim Lehmann called it, "to create a uniform, exact notation that allows automatic conversion into machine commands", for which Alwin Walther suggested the formation of a working committee. Following these suggestions, the GAMM Technical Committee for Programming (GAMM-FAP) was founded in 1956 under the chairmanship of Josef Heinhold , which should make a decisive contribution to the development of ALGOL .

Heinz Schecher , Ulrich Kulisch and Ludwig Fahrmeir are among his doctoral students . When Heinhold retired in 1981, Klaus Ritter took over the chair.
