Josef Hopmann

Josef Hopmann (born December 22, 1890 in Berlin , † October 11, 1975 in Bonn ) was an astronomer .

He worked as an astronomer in Bonn , where he completed his habilitation in 1920. In 1930 he became a full professor for astronomy at the University of Leipzig . At the University of Vienna he took over in 1951 the management of the Institute and the Vienna Observatory . From 1932 to 1954 he was a full member of the Saxon Academy of Sciences .

His research activities included star clusters , fixed star parallaxes, astrometry and double stars , as well as profile measurements and height determinations on the Earth's moon . He continued to work intensively after his retirement in 1961 and published until his death in 1975.

A 90 km large crater on the back of the moon bears Hopmann's name. In addition, the asteroid (1985) Hopmann was named after him.

Hopmann is one of the few astronomical researchers who has also written popular depictions.
