Josef Kupper

Josef Kupper (born March 10, 1932 in Lucerne ; † June 5, 2017 in Zurich ) was a Swiss actuary and professor at ETH Zurich . Until his retirement he was deputy general director of Rentenanstalt (today's Swiss Life ). He was also a successful chess player and chess composer .

Josef Kupper played internationally at the Chess Olympiads in Amsterdam in 1954 - here he achieved the second-best individual result on the top board with 10 points out of 14 games - 1958 in Munich , 1964 in Tel Aviv and 1968 in Lugano , and scored 35 points in 57 games for the Swiss team. Kupper took part in the Clare Benedict Cup twelve times and won it in Neuchâtel in 1958 with the Swiss selection.

He was also successful nationally and was Swiss chess champion three times (1954, 1957 and 1962) . In 1955 he was awarded the title of International Master by FIDE . Kupper won the Swiss team championship several times with the Zurich chess company and also took part in the European Club Cup 1975/76.

Kupper also excelled as a composer of chess problems and wrote several hundred chess problems, especially after his retirement in 1997. For decades he headed the chess column of the Basler National-Zeitung . He also took part in the 2004 World Solutions Championship and won the Swiss Solution Championship in 2002. In 2007 he was awarded the title of FIDE Problem Solving Master.
