Josef Lange (born February 20, 1948 in Vorhelm ) was State Secretary in the Lower Saxony Ministry for Science and Culture from 2003 to 2013 .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1966 at the Städtisches Neusprachlichen Gymnasium Ahlen , Josef Lange studied Catholic theology, history, and political science in Münster and Regensburg (1971 diploma examination, 1974 doctorate to Dr. phil.). Already during his studies he was involved in university politics and was a member of the Bavarian University Planning Commission from 1972 to 1974.

From 1974 to 1979, Lange worked as a consultant for fundamental questions of university development, press and information as well as personal assistant to the President of the University of Bayreuth . In 1979 he moved to the German Research Foundation (DFG) in Bonn (until 1984) as head of department and then to the office of the Science Council in Cologne.

From 1990 to the beginning of 2000, Lange was Secretary General of the University Rectors 'Conference and during this time he was represented in scientific policy committees (including 1993/1994 in the founding committee of the University of Erfurt , 1995 to 2000 in the Presidium of the Confederation of European Union Rectors' Conferences , 1998/1999 in the “Mixed Commission for Teacher Education "of the KMK , 1999/2000 in the" Expert Council in the Quality Pact "for university development in North Rhine-Westphalia).

Lange is a member of the board of trustees of the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen and the Institute for Contemporary History Munich, in the Senate of the German Aerospace Center (DLR) as well as a representative of Lower Saxony in the radio council of Deutschlandradio ; since 2006 also member of the program committee. Since August 2008 he has also been a member of the Board of Trustees of the House of History Foundation .

In May 2013, Lange was elected Chairman of the University Council of the University of Jena (as successor to Bernhard Vogel ) and held this office until the end of the 2017 legislature. Since July 2014, he has been Deputy Chairman of the University Council of Leipzig University . Lange has been Chairman of the German Spelling Council since January 1, 2017 .

Honors

On March 6, 2014, Josef Lange was awarded the Grand Cross of the Papal Order of St. Gregory for his services to cooperation between the Church and educational policy and as an advisor to the German Bishops' Conference .
