Josef Leppelt (born March 19, 1900 - November 1950 ) was an Austrian weightlifter . He was runner- up in the heavyweight division in 1923 and took part in the 1924 and 1928 Olympic Games.

Career

Josef Leppelt began lifting weights as a teenager in Vienna . He belonged to the Währing athlete club "Herkules" Vienna . Throughout his entire career, he always started in the heavyweight division, which in his day started at 82.5 kg body weight. In terms of performance, he reached the Austrian top class in 1921, in which he then held for over ten years. His main competitors in Austria were Franz Aigner and Rudolf Schilberg .

In 1922 Josef Leppelt was the first Austrian heavyweight champion. He scored 415 kg in a four-way fight, which consisted of one-armed snatch, one-armed pushing, two-armed pushing and two-armed pushing. In 1923 he qualified for the start of the world championship , which took place in Vienna. There he achieved 400 kg in the four-way fight and came in second behind Franz Aigner, who came to 420 kg. That was his greatest international success.

In 1924 he took part in the Olympic Games for the first time . He came to 455 kg in a pentathlon in Paris . With this achievement he only finished 11th. No world or European championships took place between 1924 and 1928. For this reason, participating in the Olympic Games in 1928 was Josef Leppelt's next start at an international championship. For the first time in Amsterdam, the Olympic three-way fight, consisting of two-armed pushing, tearing and pushing, was on the program. He achieved 355 kg (105-110-140) in this competition and achieved an excellent 5th place with this performance.

In 1931 Josef Leppelt started at the 2nd Workers 'Gymnastics and Festival (so-called Workers' Olympics) in Vienna and won there in the heavyweight division in a three-way fight, which consisted of one-armed snatch, one-armed pushing and two-armed pushing, weighing 325 kg (90- 105-130).

In 1934 he was again Austrian heavyweight champion and scored 532.5 kg in the pentathlon. Then he started until the end of the 1930s, mainly in team fights for his club.
