Josef Müller (art historian)

Josef Müller (born March 22, 1889 in Abensberg , Lower Bavaria ; † July 4, 1976 in Aichach , Swabia ) was a German art historian and archivist .

Joseph Müller attended the Metten monastery high school and then studied classical philology, art history and classical archeology as well as history and historical auxiliary sciences at the University of Munich . His studies were interrupted from 1914 to 1918 due to his participation in the First World War; in 1920 he received his doctorate in art history under Heinrich Wölfflin . After a traineeship at the Bavarian National Museum in 1920/21, he became an employee of the editorial staff of the General Lexicon of Fine Artists from Antiquity to the Present in Leipzig from April 1921 . In May 1929 he became head of the city history collections in the Schloßberg Museum in Chemnitz . From January 1931 to 1934 he also headed the city archive. On August 1, 1934, he was also head of the Chemnitz City Art Collection . In 1938 he was again head of the city ​​archives . In 1939 he was drafted as an officer for military service. After returning to Chemnitz in 1945, he initially resumed his work, but was then transferred to the Soviet special camp No. 2 Buchenwald for four years without being charged with any offense. On November 1, 1950, he was again appointed head of the city history collection in Chemnitz, and on October 1, 1953, he became head of the Chemnitz City Museum. At the end of 1957 he retired. In 1960 he moved back to Bavaria with his family, first to Deggendorf , then in 1966 to Aichach, where he did research on the city's history.
