Josef Messner (sculptor)

Josef Messner (born February 9, 1837 in Oberdorf near St. Peter, Rennweg am Katschberg ; † November 7, 1886 ibid) was an Austrian sculptor and painter.

Life

Messner was born the son of a master binder . He learned the watchmaking trade in Tamsweg and Gmünd . In 1857 he opened a repair workshop in Rennweg am Katschberg. He also made portrait paintings and wood carvings. Some church paintings and wood carvings also date from this period.

In 1861 he went to Munich , where he first attended the art association school and then studied at the Royal Art Academy with Joseph Schlotthauer , Wilhelm von Kaulbach and Moritz von Schwind until 1867 . Messner was a member of the Munich Association for Christian Art .

After a short stay in Carinthia, he worked in Schwanthaler's studio . There he created Hanns Gasser's statue in 1869/70 , which is now in Villach . Funded by Villacher Kunstfreunde and the Carinthian State Parliament , he was able to complete a study trip to Florence and Rome in 1872, where he stayed for eight years.

Works

In Carinthia he created numerous grave monuments, such as that of the Ghon family in Villach-Perau and that of the Feldner family in Radlach . He also created portraits and sculptural works, especially for the Vienna Parliament .
