Josef Odložil (1964)

Josef Odložil (born November 11, 1938 in Otrokovice ; † September 10, 1993 in Domašov ) was a Czechoslovak athlete who was successful as a middle-distance runner in the 1960s. He participated in two Olympic Games and won a silver medal.

Life

Josef Odložil spent his childhood in Bělá pod Pradědem . He covered the eight-kilometer way to school on foot - running. However, he did not start athletics until he was 18 years old. He initially joined the “Slován” association in Olomouc . His coach was Jaroslav Slavíček. When he moved to Košice to do his basic military service , he became a member of the local association "Slávia". His new coach for the next two years was Jan Liška, under whose care he ran all distances between 400 and 2000 m. 1961 to 1968 he started under Aleksandr Zvolenský and Aleš Poděbrad for the Prague clubs Dukla and Sparta .

After finishing his active career in 1969, he became a coach at Sparta Prague.

In 1977 he received his doctorate from Charles University in Prague. The topic of his dissertation is: "The training of top runners over 800 m". From 1979 to 1981 he worked at the Institutio Nationale Del Deporte in Mexico. From 1992 to 1993 he commanded a peace corps in Iraq. He had to leave the armed forces for political reasons at the end of the 1960s, but was rehabilitated after the fall of the Wall.

From his first marriage with the gymnastics Olympic champion Věra Čáslavská , whom he married in 1968 during the Summer Olympics in Mexico City , a son, Martin, emerged. With his second wife Eva, he had two other children, daughter Andrea and son Honza.

In 1993 there was a violent argument between Josef Odlozil and his son Martin in a restaurant in Domašov, in the course of which Martin pushed his father back, whereupon he hit his head on the edge of the counter and died after a month's coma due to the injuries he suffered. However, there are different versions of the cause and course of the fatal argument between father and son. Odložil was buried on the Kostel svatého Jana Křtitele ( German  cemetery at the Church of John the Baptist ) in the district Domašov of the town of Bělá pod Pradědem. Martin Odložil was sentenced to four years in prison. He was later pardoned by President Václav Havel .

Since 1993 there has been an annual Josef Odložil Memorial in Prague .

On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of his death, his sister Miloslava Ševčíková published a biography entitled Prostě zabil jsem svého otce ( German  “I just killed my father” ).
